1930 until 1934<\/strong>: attends school at the Heinrich von Treitschke Realgymnasium in Berlin-Sch\u00f6neberg.<\/p>\n

1934 until 1938<\/strong>: resides in Berlin-Halensee.<\/p>\n

1934 until 1935<\/strong>: attends the American school in Berlin-Sch\u00f6neberg. After change of residence, attends secondary school in Berlin-Grunewald.<\/p>\n

1936 until 1938<\/strong>: apprenticeship with the portrait, nude and fashion photographer Yva (Else Simon, ne\u00e9 Neul\u00e4nder) in Berlin-Charlottenburg.<\/p>\n

1938<\/strong>: flees Berlin via train at Zoo station towards Trieste, taking with him two stills cameras. Finds work in Singapore at the Singapore Straits Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1940<\/strong>: arrives in Australia and serves for five years in the Australian army. In 1946 becomes an Australian citizen.<\/p>\n

1947<\/strong>: meets actress June Brunell<\/a>, who poses as a model for him. They marry one year later.<\/p>\n

1956<\/strong>: extended travels through Europe. In London acquires a one-year contract at British Vogue<\/em>, which Newton quits after 11 months. Thereafter in Paris and return to Melbourne; contract with Australian Vogue<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1961<\/strong>: back to Paris, takes apartment in the Rue Aubriot in Marais quarter. Full-time position with French Vogue<\/em>, occasional editorial photography for British Vogue<\/em> and Queen<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1964<\/strong>: until 1966 editorials for French Elle<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1964<\/strong>: acquires a small house and vineyard in Ramatuelle, not far from St. Tropez, where Helmut and June Newton will spend their future vacations.<\/p>\n

1966<\/strong>: renews contract with French Vogue<\/em> under the new editor-in-chief Francine Crescent.<\/p>\n

1970<\/strong>: June Newton (alias Alice Springs) begins her career as a photographer: when her husband is ill, she steps in to shoot a cigarette advertisement.<\/p>\n

1971<\/strong>: Helmut Newton suffers a heart attack in New York. Convalescence in Lennox Hill Hospital, New York.<\/p>\n

1975<\/strong>: first exhibitions of the commercially successful photographer: first solo exhibit in the Nikon Gallery in Paris.<\/p>\n

1976<\/strong>: publication of his first volume of photographs White Women<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1981<\/strong>: Helmut and June Newton move from Paris to Monaco; they will spend the winter months in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong>: awarded the French \u201cGrand Prix National de la Photographie.\u201d<\/p>\n

1992<\/strong>: awarded \u201cOfficier des Arts, Lettres et Sciences\u201d in Monaco as well as presentation of the \u201cThe Grand Cross of Merit\u201d (Das Grosse Bundesverdienstkreuz) of the Federal Republic of Germany.<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong>: commendation to \u201cCommandeur de L\u2019Ordre des Arts et Lettres\u201d by the French ministry of culture.<\/p>\n

2000<\/strong>: large retrospective for his 80th birthday in the New National Gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie) in Berlin that travels to London, New York, Tokyo, Moscow and Prague, among others.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong>: formal agreement on the establishment of the Helmut Newton Foundation<\/a> in Berlin with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preu\u00dfischer Kulturbesitz).<\/p>\n

2004<\/strong>: Helmut Newton dies in Los Angeles.
